We read the rules at the source: state statutes (for Texas, statutes.capitol.texas.gov), state environmental and insurance agencies, and the U.S. Department of Energy's building energy code pages. We write them in plain English and link or name the source. We're not lawyers, so confirm anything important with the office named.
Cost ranges come only from prices that builders, kit sellers, counties and utilities publish on their own websites. We record the page, the date we checked it and what the price includes. We leave out lead-generation sites and figures we can't trace to the business that charges them. Where we have no reliable figure, we say so.
We list companies that say on their own websites that they build barndominiums in a state, and record what they say about where they work and what they build. We don't rank builders, check licenses or vouch for their work. We don't record personal names or phone numbers. Listings are free, and paying us never changes a listing.
Climate figures are NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals for named weather stations. City and county lists come from the U.S. Census Bureau's incorporated places. Septic permitting authorities come from each state's environmental agency (in Texas, TCEQ's county lookup).
Every page shows when it was checked. If something's wrong or out of date, please tell us.
